Songs and StoriesThat Celebrate Global Light

Early Mesopotamians living in the Fertile
Crescent—the area between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers known today
as Iraq and Iran—worshipped a god named “Marduk” who
was strong enough to conquer the monsters of darkness. They celebrated
Marduk’s win and the first light of spring during a 12-day festival called
“Zagmuth.”
We are all grateful for the
sun’s warmth, the miracle of light, the bright new days when it dispels the
darkness, the melting of cold winter snows, planting of fields and the
growth of crops).
Thanks to the Earth
Mother of life,
Awake from winter’s embrace.
Thanks to the Earth
Mother of life,
Let sunlight warm every face!
Thanks to the Sun.
Thanks to its rising!
Thanks to the brightness of the day.
Thanks to the Sun.
Thanks to its rising.
Thanks to the light that shines our way!
