Mr. Cricket, Mr. Cricket
What makes you chirp so loud?
Some say by rubbing your wings together
is how you make your chirping sound.
So I asked Mr. Cricket how it was done.
He said, “Lean down here close by.”
“Before I start to chirp and hum,
I’d like to tell ya ‘bout my families side.”
You see, I come from the Order Orthoptera
and all my cousins too.
There’s the cockroach, katydid, and grasshopper,
The mantids and the locust crew.
Mr. Cricket, Mr. Cricket
What makes you chirp so loud?
Some say by rubbing your wings together
is how you make your chirping sound.
Some of us are known for our strong back legs,
and for our rhythmic sounds.
We fold our wings back like a fan,
and cover them with a leathery crown.
Now Mr. Cricket, I understand
that your Order is a special kind.
But what I’d really like to know
is how you sing so fine.
Mr. Cricket, Mr. Cricket
What makes you chirp so loud?
Some say by rubbing your wings together
is how you make your chirping sound.
Alright now, listen up child
This is how it’s done.
Those who told you it’s was by my wings,
were correct, but here is more.
I rub my wings together
that’s how I make the chirping sound.
The bottom wing has a scraper,
the top one has a rough edge for making sound.
Mr. Cricket, Mr. Cricket
That’s how you chirp so loud?
Yes, by rubbing your wings together
is how you make your chirping sound.
