This song is also performed on Fran Avni's I'm All Ears: Sing Into Reading.
In this song, the first part of the word is always the part taken away. "Milkshake," "earthquake," and "snowflake" also work in this song to make new verses in which the last part of the word is taken away.
The part of the word to be taken can be guessed by the rhyme words, but the operation suggested -- taking the part away and asking what is left -- is not carried out in the song. It can be done after each verse or as a separate exercise after the song is over: "From the wishbone take the ....WISH!....and what is left? BONE!"
Shout out the answers. Then whisper them.
Can you think of other rhyming compound words?
CHORUS:
Take a word apart
Take a word apart
Take a part away.
Find the part that's left behind,
What does that part say? Hey!
From the treetop take the tree,
From the kneecap take the knee,
From the seashell take the ..... sea!
Take a part away.
From the teapot take the tea,
From the keyhole take the key
From the beehive take the ..... bee!
Take a part away.
CHORUS
From the handball take the hand,
From the sandwich take the sand ,
From the landslide take the .....land!
Take a part away.
From the chairlift take the chair
From the hairdo take the hair
From the scarecrow take the ..... scare!
Take a part away.
CHORUS
From the snowfall take the snow
From the doughnut take the dough,
From the glowworm take the ..... glow!
Take a part away.
From the dishcloth take the dish,
From the fishbowl take the fish,
From the wishbone take the ..... wish!
Take a part away.
CHORUS
